NF S61-942 Compliant Threat Alarms for Fire Systems
Introduced for France, the NF S61-942 Standard authorises the use of a fire safety system broadcasting sound and light information that provokes appropriate behavior (evacuation or confinement) in the face of a threat (armed attack, hostage-taking, riot, etc.).
The NF S61-942 standard complies with the provisions of the Threat Alert Chain recommendations published by the General Secretariat for Defence and National Security (SGDSN) within the Guide to Good Practices for the Security of Public Spaces.
The NF S61-942 Threat Alarm standard, published in December 2022, outlines the requirements for integrating Threat Alarms (Diffuseur Alarme Menace, or DAM, in French) into fire safety systems.
It defines the expected functionalities of the systems’ constituent parts as well as their installation conditions.
A Threat Alarm communicates to building occupants that they should take appropriate action (evacuation or confinement) in the face of a threat (armed attacks, hostage-taking, riots, chemical danger, etc.), with the aim of limiting panic and the number of victims. The Threat Alarm can be broadcast generally and/or selectively. A general Threat Alarm is used to warn all building occupants, while the selective Threat Alarm is used to limit the information to certain categories of people.
Also defined by NF S61-942, the Threat Alarm Unit is an additional function, integrated into the central fire safety system, that ensures the management of the threat alarm process.
